A 2007 study by William and Mary College’s Schroeder Center for Healthcare Policy proclaimed Powhatan as the sixth healthiest community in Virginia. According to the study of 134 Virginia localities, Powhatan placed sixth in the rankings based on 14 risk factors, including smoking, cancer deaths, and poverty. In a more recent study, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation also ranked Powhatan sixth in their "County Health Rankings". Powhatan is the only metro-Richmond community to rank in the top 10 in both studies.
There are three medical establishments, three dental offices, two optometrists, two chiropractors, two physical therapy centers and two pharmacies to serve the residents of Powhatan. The Powhatan Volunteer Rescue Squad provides service to nearby Bon Secours Medical Center, approximately 7 miles away in Midlothian, and CJW Medical Center, approximately 9 miles away in Richmond. Established in 2007, the Powhatan Free Clinic offers high quality health care and wellness services to the uninsured and low-income adult residents of Powhatan. Operated by volunteers, the free clinic is available Mondays and Thursdays at the Powhatan Health Department. The County’s Health Department provides immunizations, family planning, home health care, maternity care and child wellness care.
