The county is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors. An appointed County Administrator oversees the daily operations of Powhatan. Police protection and assistance are provided by a sheriff, under sheriff, 41 patrol deputies and six state police officers. There are five fire stations with 130 volunteer firemen to assist in a fire emergency.
